Penguin Wen Thick Pork Soup – Shuanglian|Thick Pork Soup (Geng) — Zhongshan / MRT Shuanglian

Overview

Geng” (羹) is a traditional Taiwanese-style thickened soupmade by adding starch to a savory broth, giving it a silky texture. Geng is often served alongside noodles or rice vermicelli with common ingredients such as meatballs, deep-fried fish cake, squid, and mushrooms.

Located just steps from MRT Shuanglian Station, the shop has been serving locals for more than 30 years and is now operated by the third generation of the founding family. The shop is best known for its freshly hand-shaped pork meatballs, prepared daily, and its signature broth, made with a house-crafted pork lard stock that delivers a rich, naturally sweet savory flavor.

Sean’s Review

1st visit :

August 2nd, 2026 : 肉羹米粉 + Fish Crisp Geng (魚酥羹)

The broth was wonderfully light and naturally sweet, with none of the greasy aftertaste that pork lard-based soups sometimes have. The pork meatballs were delightfully springy, clearly made from fresh, never-frozen pork. My personal favorite was the Fish Crisp Geng (魚酥羹). The fish crisps were exceptionally crispy, and the combination of the steaming-hot, silky geng broth with the freshly fried, crunchy fish crisps made for a refreshing and incredibly enjoyable bowl.
