Overview
MORI (森 魚丸湯、肉燥飯) is a small eatery in Tainan specializing in classic local comfort food, particularly milkfish (虱目魚) dishes and Braised Pork Rice (肉燥飯). Unlike Taipei, Tainan has a distinctive breakfast culture where hearty dishes are common first thing in the morning. For many locals, a bowl of fresh Milkfish Belly Soup (虱目魚湯) is a perfectly normal way to start the day.
MORI captures this traditional Tainan breakfast experience with Milkfish Belly Soup (虱目魚肚湯), Fish Ball Soup (魚丸湯), and other familiar local dishes. Its milkfish dishes emphasize freshness, with limited portions prepared for the day — once certain items sell out, they’re gone.

Milkfish Belly Soup

Grandma’s Braised Pork Rice + Braised Tofu + Mixed Ball Soup (with Youtiao)
This is one of those restaurants I return to every time I visit Tainan. Their Milkfish Belly Soup (虱目魚肚湯) is incredibly fresh, and most importantly, the entire piece of milkfish belly is completely boneless, making it easy for both adults and children to enjoy.
Their Braised Pork Rice (滷肉飯) is on the saltier side, but the soy sauce gives it a much deeper flavor. A little cilantro on top brings out the sweet and savory aroma even more.
My favorite, however, is their Milkfish Skin Soup (虱目魚皮湯). Being able to enjoy such fresh milkfish first thing in the morning is one of those simple things that makes me genuinely happy whenever I’m in Tainan.
