Overview

Zet’s Kuki (澤特餅乾 匈牙利煙囪捲 士林店) is a Hungarian chimney cake shop at Shilin Night Market in Taipei. Started by a Taiwanese — Hungarian couple, the stall only sells one thing : chimney cake (kürtőskalács), a traditional Hungarian pastry made by wrapping dough around a cylinder and baking it until crisp outside and soft inside.

The stall is the only stall in Shilin Night Market owned by a European immigrant. Everything is handmade and freshly prepared to order, and customers can adjust the sweetness by choosing less or no additional glaze. Different toppings and fillings are available, including cinnamon, chocolate, almond, and pistachio.

Hungarian chimney cake, topped with ice cream

This was my first time trying a Hungarian chimney cake. Everything at the stall is freshly made to order so mine was still warm when it was handed to me. The warm pastry slowly melted the ice cream on top, allowing it to soak into the soft, warm dough. I really enjoyed the combination of hot and cold in every bite.

What I like most about this stall is how fresh everything is. I also love that you can adjust the sweetness. If you don’t have a big sweet tooth, you can ask for less sauce or no additional sauce at all, making this European dessert much easier to enjoy.
